Conversion rates don't lie: How my live raid beat my TikTok ads

I compared $1,200 in static TikTok ads to a single live cross-platform raid during the Fall in Love with Gaming campaign, and the live raid delivered far better cost-per-retained-follower, engagement, and 30-day community retention. Numbers, funnel breakdowns, and the exact tactics I used to repeat this are inside.

You just dropped $1,200 on a static TikTok ad and watched the follow count creep up by 180, while your stream chat stayed quiet. I was there too, and I ran an experiment to compare that spend against a single coordinated live raid during the Fall in Love with Gaming campaign. The results were not close.

Quick snapshot: what I tested

  • Creator baseline: 45,000 TikTok followers, regular 2–3 hour streams on Twitch, active Discord with 1,100 members.
  • Test window: two-week period, same content themes, same creative voice.
  • Condition A: $1,200 spent on static TikTok ads (in-feed video, 15 seconds, plain follow CTA).
  • Condition B: One live cross-platform raid event, 28 partner streamers, coordinated raid times, organic traffic, $0 paid media directed to the raid.

The hard numbers

Condition A — Static TikTok ads

  • Impressions: 260,000
  • Clicks to profile: 1,150 (0.44% CTR)
  • New TikTok follows attributed: 180
  • Discord sign-ups via link in bio: 60
  • 7-day retention (followers who returned to watch a stream or engage): 34 (19% of new follows)
  • 30-day retention: 22 (12% of new follows)
  • Cost per new follower: $6.67
  • Cost per 30-day retained follower: $54.55

Condition B — Live cross-platform raid

  • Peak unique viewers across platforms during raid: 3,400
  • New TikTok follows during/within 48 hours: 510
  • New Discord joins during/within 48 hours: 340
  • 7-day retention: 256 (50% of new follows)
  • 30-day retention: 214 (42% of new follows)
  • Organizer paid spend: $0, time invested: ~12 hours prep and 5 hours live
  • Effective cost per 30-day retained follower: $0 if you ignore time cost, $1.40 if you value organizer promotion at $300

The math is blunt: with the ad you paid $54.55 for every follower who stuck around a month. With the raid, even if you put a dollar value on your time, the effective cost landed well under $2 per retained community member.

Why the raid converted better: three concrete reasons

  1. Context matters. The raid arrived in active streams where viewers were already in discovery mode. When someone sees you hosted mid-match, you are joining a live experience, not interrupting a scroll. That translated to longer initial watch time: average watch time from ad-followers was 3.4 minutes, while raid-followers averaged 47 minutes in the first session.
  2. Social proof and community momentum. Seeing 28 creators promote the same event, with chat activity and raid calls to action, created a pick-up effect. Of the 340 Discord joins, 210 came within the first hour after a raid leader invited them. That immediate social proof makes follow behavior habitual, not accidental.
  3. Follow-through funnels. The raid included pinned links, a two-minute onboarding segment, and a follow-up pinned clip across platforms. 66% of raid followers clicked the Discord link, compared to 33% from the ad. Those extra touchpoints created repeat visits, which underpinned the higher 30-day retention.

What I actually did, step by step

  • Pre-raid: posted three short TikToks teasing the raid, posted schedule across Twitter and Discord, coordinated start time with 28 partners.
  • During raid: used a “welcome loop” overlay and a 90-second welcome script asking newcomers to hit follow and join Discord, pinned join links in chat and bio, offered a simple community incentive: a giveaway exclusive to Discord members.
  • Post-raid: posted a 30-second highlight clip to TikTok within 12 hours, pinned the clip to my profile, DM’d 120 new followers with a short thank-you that included the Discord link.

If you want to replicate this without being a mega streamer

  • Partner with peers at your size or one tier up, not just influencers. Mutual raids scale trust.
  • Make it easy to join beyond the follow: Discord, email, or an easy sign-up with a single tap.
  • Use a short onboarding routine in the first 3 minutes of the stream to convert casual viewers into repeat viewers.

The takeaway with numbers attached

Static ads gave me reach, but little community stickiness. The live raid provided fewer impressions, but far higher-quality conversions: 42% 30-day retention, average first-session watch time of 47 minutes, and a cost per retained community member under $2 when you account for minimal organizer promotion. That is what I mean when I say conversion rates do not lie.

If you want to compare your last ad campaign versus an organic raid, send me your ad spend, new followers, and 30-day retention numbers. I will run the same funnel math with you, and if you want, I will share the raid checklist I used for this campaign.
